چکیده

The broad band X-ray spectrum of the lowmass X-ray binary (LMXB) GS 1826-238 was measured with the narrow-field instruments on BeppoSAX on April 6 and 7, 1997. The spectrum is consistent with the Comptonization of a 0.6 keV thermal spectrum by a hot cloud of temperature equivalent kT = 20 keV. During the observation two type I X-ray bursts were detected. From the bursts an upper limit to the distance could be derived of 8 kpc. Combined with an elsewhere determined lower limit of 4 kpc this implies a persistent X-ray luminosity between 3.5×10 and 1.4×10 erg s which is fairly typical for a LMXB X-ray burster. The accurate determination of the energetics of the two bursts and the persistent emission confirm results with the Wide Field Cameras on BeppoSAX in a narrower bandpass (Ubertini et al. 1999). Comparison with independent X-ray measurements taken at other times indicates that GS 1826-238 since its turnon in 1988 is a rather stable accretor, which is in line with the strong regularity of type I X-ray bursts.

Deviations from the Flux-recurrence Time Relationship in Gs 1826–238: Potential Transient Spectral Changes

The low-mass X-ray binary GS 1826−238 is presently unique for its consistently regular bursting behavior. In previous Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) measurements between 1997 November and 2002 July, this source exhibited (nearly) limit-cycle bursts with recurrence times that decreased proportionately as the persistent flux increased. Here we report additional measurements of the burst recur...

Bepposax Observations of the Galactic Source Gs 1826-238 in a Hard X-ray High State

The BeppoSAX Narrow Field Instruments observed the galactic source GS 1826-238 in October 1997, following a hard X-ray burst with a peak flux of about 100 mCrab detected by BATSE. Two short X-ray bursts (∼150 seconds) were detected up to 60 keV, with larger amplitude and duration at lower energies (up to a factor 20 times the persistent emission). This confirms the proposed identification of th...

Bursts from Gs 1826-238: a Clocked Thermonuclear Flashes Generator

The transient X-ray source GS 1826-238 was monitored during five different observing periods between August 1996 and October 1998 with the BeppoSAX Wide Field Camera instrument in the framework of a deep observation of the Galactic Center region. A first detection of X-ray bursts from this source occurred, ruling out its previously suggested black hole candidacy and strongly suggesting the comp...

Models of Type I X-ray Bursts from Gs 1826-24: a Probe of Rp-process Hydrogen Burning

The X-ray burster GS 1826-24 shows extremely regular Type I X-ray bursts whose energetics and recurrence times agree well with thermonuclear ignition models. We present calculations of sequences of burst lightcurves using multizone models which follow the nucleosynthesis (αp and rp-processes) with an extensive nuclear reaction network. The theoretical and observed burst lightcurves show remarka...

Periodic Thermonuclear X-ray Bursts from Gs 1826−24 and the Fuel Composition as a Function of Accretion Rate

We analyze 24 type I X-ray bursts from GS 1826−24 observed by the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer between 1997 November and 2002 July. The bursts observed between 1997–98 were consistent with a stable recurrence time of 5.74 ± 0.13 hr. The persistent intensity of GS 1826−24 increased by 36% between 1997–2000, by which time the burst interval had decreased to 4.10± 0.08 hr. In 2002 July the recurren...
